TeraTeam UK Teradata DBA Definition

term: Teradata SQL Tuning

Teradata SQL Tuning

Structured Query Language (SQL) is an intuitive language for querying databases.

The standards for SQL are covered by ANSI standards.

Teradata has it's own variations on ANSI standard SQL and includes many OLAP functions.

SQL Tuning is the art of amending SQL to run in a more efficient manner. This often involves analysis of the explain plan, checking of statistics, reviewing join and where conditions and checking of primary indexes. There are many more aspects to tuning that are covered in our SQL Tuning Course.

An experienced Teradata DBA can save many tens of thousands of CPU seconds by Tuning SQL, but why is this important?

Put simply, it saves you time and money! Your system has a finite number of CPU seconds available per node. The faster they are used, the sooner you have to expand your box. By reducing CPU usage significantly, you can extend the life of your Teradata Database significantly.

Terateam UK have many methods for saving CPU. It is not just the big queries you need to look out for. Small, frequently repeated SQL queries can be optimised to make just as larger CPU savings as the the one-off big hitters. Terateam UK have many processes for identifying where savings can be made and are experts in optimising SQL, saving CPU and hence extending the life of your server, delaying the need to expand your system and potentially saving millions of pounds/dollars.
